More about Tijuana Slough

Tijuana Slough is a heavy-water reef break that develops over a cobblestone bottom extending from a few hundred yards to over half a mile offshore. The break generates its best waves during northwest and north groundswells in winter, when it can produce waves exceeding twenty feet with long, powerful rides stretching hundreds of yards. Multiple distinct peaks form across the reef structure. The spot is extremely technical and dangerous, suited only to expert big-wave surfers with experience in strong currents and heavy conditions.

The Tijuana Sloughs has been surfed since 1937, when body surfer Allen Dempsey Holder first ventured into the waves. After World War II it became the primary big-wave testing ground for Southern California surfers preparing for Hawaiian trips, earning a reputation as the most significant heavy-water break on the continental U.S. coast through much of the twentieth century. Despite its historical prestige, the spot has largely ceased to be surfed due to environmental conditions.

Located at the border near Imperial Beach where the Tijuana River meets the ocean, access is extremely hazardous. Untreated sewage and industrial runoff from the Tijuana River create a persistent pollution plume in the takeoff zone. The beach is frequently closed during winter, and surfers who paddle out report serious health issues including gastrointestinal illnesses and hepatitis. Beyond pollution, the reef harbors sharks and stingrays. The combination of extreme wave power, disease risk, and hostile conditions has made the break essentially abandoned despite its historical standing.
