More about Three Mile

Three Mile is a Westside beachbreak with a deep channel and notoriously shifty takeoff that excels during large winter swells, producing punchy, heavy sessions with wave heights typically ranging from shoulder-high to overhead. The break suffers from boils and gurgles due to its uneven reef bottom but can turn fun on the right swell. Summer south swells produce cleaner, more manageable peaks that favor longer rides.

The spot has been a local option for experienced surfers seeking less-crowded waves relative to nearby Four Mile, though specific documentation of notable historical sessions or competitions at Three Mile is limited.

Access involves a steep, unmaintained descent down the bluff from Highway 1 parking, requiring sturdy footwear on the slippery trail. The small beach can become inaccessible at high tide in its shallow pocket coves. The break responds best to long-period southwest to northwest swell and continues to carry the hazards already noted: rip currents, cliff instability, and no lifeguard presence.
