More about Thirroul

Thirroul breaks as both a beach and reef formation, producing left and right hand waves from a sandy bottom with an additional right-hand reef break. The break responds best to southeast swell with west-northwest winds; mid to high tide on a rising cycle offers the most shape. Winter, particularly July, brings the most consistent rideable conditions at roughly 51% frequency. Waves typically range from waist to chest height in regular conditions, building to head high or larger during swells, with occasional spellbound sections. The exposures present some difficulty for newer surfers relative to gentler venues, though softer shoulders do break.

Thirroul's Surf Life Saving Club, established in 1907, anchors the spot's long history. It has hosted major national competitions including the Australian Junior Surfing Titles. The beach gained historical notice when early competitive surfer John Bloomfield won multiple races there in 1951 and later authored "Know-how in the Surf," an influential instructional text published in 1959.

The beach sits one kilometre along Thirroul's oceanfront, readily accessible via the local train station within walking distance, sidestepping parking strain during peak periods. Facilities include toilets and disabled access. The waters are netted against shark activity. Watch for rips and rocky sections near the break.
