More about The Spit
The Spit is a left-hand river mouth break at the north end of Main Beach, formed against the Gold Coast Seaway jetty. The north side of the jetty in the corner produces long lefts near the breakwall, while the middle and southern sections offer multiple peaks. The break handles waist-high to triple overhead waves and suits shortboards best, though smaller swells work on longboards. East swell paired with northwest winds creates the best conditions; the spot works at all tide stages but carries strong currents associated with the seaway channel, particularly in the jetty channel itself. Most consistent during winter and especially June, though it works through summer when offshore northerly winds protect it from becoming choppy.
The spot is a favored local break and less touristy than other nearby stretches despite being easy to access and paddle into, likely because locals know its best windows and strongest currents require attention.
Hazards include sharks, powerful rips and currents around the seaway, rocks near the jetty, and obstacles in the water. The break is formed by a working sand bypass system jetty that extends 494 metres offshore and remains an active navigation structure.
