More about The Rock
The Rock is a right-hand reef break characterized by steep takeoffs and punchy peaks that work best during summer months, particularly May, when south swells combine with offshore westerly winds. Wave quality depends heavily on tide—the break performs best at mid to high tide, becoming increasingly rocky and hazardous at low water. On good days, the wave can run up to 100 yards along the reef. The bottom is sharp reef with scattered rocks, and the shallow water creates sharp impacts if you fall or lose your board.
Part of the Costa Azul complex between the gentler Old Man's and the more difficult Zippers break, The Rock occupies an intermediate skill level. This area has been a known Cabo surf destination since at least the early 1990s, when the Fletcher Los Cabos Classic—won by Kelly Slater in 1991—established the Costa Azul zone as a serious professional venue. While The Rock itself doesn't regularly host major competitions, the area's status draws experienced surfers seeking quality waves away from the crowds at the busier Zippers peak nearby.
Access is straightforward: the break sits at a large rock outcropping at Costa Azul in San José del Cabo, below a recognized viewpoint. The sandy beach access via the arroyo under the Costa Azul Bridge remains consistent. Hazards include the shallow sharp reef requiring careful paddling, rocks and sea urchins scattered throughout the break, strong local currents that can complicate paddling, and potentially competitive conditions when the swell is running and crowds arrive.
