More about The Pit

The Pit is a fast, dumpy beach break with a sand bottom that rarely produces long rides even in favorable conditions. Spring is the best season, when short-period wind swells funnel through the Santa Barbara Channel and create the most playable waves, though most surfers in the area treat it as a secondary option depending on swell direction and period.

The spot has served as a local dive beach since at least the sixties, when it was known as a secluded hangout for surf bums. A core group of locals, who self-identify as the "pit crew," have maintained a strong presence there for decades, creating a reputation for territorial localism that deters visiting surfers.

The Pit is located at the end of Las Positas Road where Arroyo Burro Creek empties into the ocean, nestled between Hope Ranch and the Douglas Family Preserve on Cliff Drive, roughly five miles west of downtown Santa Barbara. Public access runs down a long stairway from a free parking lot at the bluff top. A restaurant (Boathouse) operates on the beach. The creek mouth, where most surfers paddle out, becomes hazardous after heavy rain due to runoff and debris.
