More about Ten Mile Beach
Ten Mile Beach is a sand-bottomed beach break receiving consistent west and northwest swell, working best on a mid-rising tide with east winds to shape the face. The break produces intermediate-level waves with enough power to demand respect; the long, exposed shoreline catches everything the open Pacific sends, making conditions changeable and sometimes hefty.
Fall offers the most reliable combination of swell direction, wind patterns, and water temperature. Rip currents are a real hazard in places, and the water temperature requires a thick wetsuit year-round in this part of Northern California.
Ten Mile Beach lies within MacKerricher State Park at Inglenook Fen-Ten Mile Dunes Preserve, about 10 miles north of Fort Bragg. Access is via parking at the south end off Ward Avenue or at the north end near Ten Mile River Bridge on Highway 1 (milepost 69.67). The walk to the water can be substantial depending on tide and sand conditions. This is quiet country with minimal commercial development and no lifeguard presence.
