More about Tajiguas
Tajiguas breaks over a boulder and sand bottom with variable topography that creates shifting peaks across the beach. Waves work in both directions and can run 50 meters or more, though the inconsistent bottom means sections are tricky and conditions vary considerably depending on swell angle and tide. The break performs best with southwest swell and north wind around mid tide, and is most consistent through summer months. Waist-high to overhead waves occur regularly, and the exposed position means it can pick up considerable size during larger swells, though it rarely draws crowds.
Access requires hiking down from Highway 101 via a trail that crosses active railroad tracks, leading to a narrow, undeveloped beach beneath tall bluffs with dramatic sea caves. The pullout parking is unmarked and located along the Gaviota Coast about 25 miles north of Santa Barbara. There are no facilities at the beach—no water, food, or services—so supplies must come from Goleta or surrounding areas. Hazards include rocks, rip currents, and sea urchins with sharp spines common in the rocky areas, plus occasional shark presence typical of this stretch of coast.
