More about Tafedna

Tafedna is a right-hand point break with a sand bottom that generates consistent lines extending up to 200 meters along the coast. Waves typically range from waist-high to double overhead, with the optimal swell window between 1 and 2.5 meters. North and northwest winter groundswells produce the cleanest conditions, particularly with offshore east winds; the break functions at all tides but performs most reliably from low to mid-tide. The wave suits intermediate to advanced shortboarders, though accessible beach breaks cater to beginners and longboarders. Navigating around rocks at the northern headland and managing exposed bottom features at low tide requires local knowledge or a guide.

Tafedna lacks documented surfing history. It entered the surf tourism sphere through modern surf camp development around the 2010s rather than through any historical milestone, competition, or notable surfers.

The village lies approximately 60 kilometers south of Essaouira via the N1 coastal highway, a one-hour drive with well-maintained pavement. From the highway near Smimou, an unpaved track leads to the beach and is passable by standard rental vehicles. The Berber fishing village has minimal infrastructure—a handful of seafood restaurants, basic convenience stores, no fuel station or ATM. Visitors must stock supplies in Essaouira or Agadir. The Dancing the Waves camp serves as the primary accommodation hub, with scattered Airbnb options available. The prime surfing window runs October through April when winter swells peak and winds ease; May through August shifts to kitesurfing conditions. The spot's appeal centers on remaining genuinely undercrowded compared to established breaks 30 kilometers away, preserved precisely by its remoteness and lack of services.
