More about Surf Beach

Surf Beach is a fairly consistent beach break that works year-round, with both left and right-hand waves that can turn fast and hollow when conditions align. The sand bottom responds well to northwest swell combined with southeast offshore winds, and the best performance typically occurs around high tide, with winter months (particularly January) showing more reliable, larger swell. The beach rarely crowds with surfers, partly due to strong rip currents and the hazards detailed below.

Fatal great white shark attacks in October 2010 and October 2012 remain the most significant documented incidents at this site. The 2012 incident claimed the life of Francisco Javier Solorio Jr., a local surfer; the 2010 attack killed a college student from inland. Researchers noted a troubling pattern—white shark incidents at Surf Beach occurred approximately every two years in October during the late 2000s and early 2010s, leading to speculation that an adult female great white may have been returning on a roughly biennial migration cycle. The combination of these attacks and persistent rip currents has made the spot actively discouraged for recreational water activity.

Surf Beach occupies the only publicly accessible section of Vandenberg Air Force Base's coastline, about nine miles west of Lompoc. Free parking is available at an Amtrak station lot near the beach entrance. The beach is closed to the public from March through September during snowy plover nesting season, and occasional closures occur around military exercises or rocket launch operations.
