More about Sunset Beach
Sunset Beach is a beginner-friendly right point break where waves produce long, mellow right-hand rollers that provide extended rides ideal for learning, particularly on longboards. The break works best on low tide when a southwest swell combines with northeasterly wind, and is most consistent during the winter months. The bottom is rocky with boulders creating the point, and hazards include exposed rocks along the inside sections and occasional water-quality issues from storm runoff and urban runoff during rain events.
The beach sits at the northern end of Will Rogers State Beach, part of Pacific Palisades' broader surfing culture. While Pacific Palisades has been featured in surf-related television and film, specific historical information about this particular break's role in local surfing heritage is limited.
Sunset Beach is accessed at the end of Sunset Boulevard where it meets Pacific Coast Highway, with parking available along the highway shoulder and at the adjacent Gladstone's Restaurant. This is one of the least crowded point breaks in the Los Angeles area, making it relatively peaceful compared to other local options.
