More about Sue-meg

Sue-meg is a left-hand point break over a deepwater reef and boulder-infused bottom that can reach 25 feet in winter swells. It breaks for up to 200 meters on big conditions before a steep section over boulders. Optimal swell direction is west-northwest with east-facing offshore winds; tide recommendations vary among sources (some favor high tide to avoid submerged rocks, others low). The wave is heavy and mean, well-suited only to advanced surfers. Winter offers the best conditions, though clean waves materialize less than 30 percent of the time in January.

Sue-meg sits 25 miles north of Eureka within Sue-meg State Park. The area is reachable via highway access near Trinidad, on the Humboldt County coast. Local lore associates the site with the Yurok Indians, who held it as a sacred place called Sumeg, though documented surf history specific to this break is sparse.
