More about Stoners Point

Stoners Point is a right-hand point break that breaks over a rock and sand bottom along Matenchen Bay's outer point. The wave's defining quality is its extreme length, capable of producing rides stretching hundreds of meters when the swell is right, with frequent sections allowing surfers to link long flowing passages down the point. It works best with southwest swell, northeast wind, and low to mid tide conditions, typically most reliable during summer months and particularly strong in October. The break attracts intermediate to advanced surfers and is rarely crowded, though hazards including sharp rocks, strong rip currents, and sharks require knowledge of the spot before paddling out.

Stoners Point achieved legendary status after being discovered by Long Beach photographer Leo Hatzel in the early 1960s, quickly becoming known as a secret spot among surfers. In the 1970s it held a Guinness World Record as the world's longest surfable wave, with documented rides exceeding 5,700 feet. The spot earned its reputation through influential surf photography and media coverage that made it iconic in surf culture. However, the wave's performance has diminished over time following major hurricanes that shifted the bay's sand patterns, so the exceptional marathon rides that defined it decades ago are no longer typical.

Access to Stoners Point is straightforward from San Blas town, located just south along a mellow cobblestone beach. The spot sits between El Borrego and Matanchen, west of Las Islitas beach on the bay's outer point, making it relatively accessible for visiting surfers compared to more remote breaks in the region.
