More about Stone Island
Stone Island hosts multiple breaks suited to different conditions and skill levels, primarily a beach break at Peaks that peels across sandbars and a more consistent right-hand point break at Escollera. The spot works year-round but produces its clearest, most organized conditions during summer months, particularly August, when southwest swell combines with offshore winds from the northeast. Tide movements significantly affect conditions—high tide can flood the narrow connection between the island and mainland. Expect crowds on good days and hazards including shallow rocks, sea urchins, and polluted water in places.
American surfers discovered the Mazatlan area in the 1960s, and Stone Island became a consistent draw for the local scene as it developed. The region hosts regular competitions, most notably the Mexi Log Fest, a longboarding event drawing international contestants. Fernando Aguilar, a local icon who has been surfing for over four decades, helped establish the regional surf culture and continues mentoring younger surfers.
Access is straightforward by water taxi—regular panga boats depart from docks near Lighthouse Beach or Puntilla restaurant every 15–20 minutes, taking about ten minutes to reach the island. The round-trip fare runs roughly 30–50 Mexican pesos. The island itself has simple amenities including palapa restaurants and vendor services catering to both day-trippers and surfers.
