More about South Ocean Beach
Ocean Beach's southern sections form a sandy beach break that fires on west-facing swells and works across multiple swell directions, with the best shape typically occurring at low to mid-tide. The constantly shifting sandbars and long paddle out—lacking any clear channel—demand solid ocean knowledge. Water stays cold year-round, averaging around 56 to 62 degrees Fahrenheit, and the section experiences serious rip currents generated by water moving in and out of the Golden Gate Strait, which can exceed eight feet per second and are the primary hazard regardless of wave size.
Surfing arrived at Ocean Beach in the 1930s and 1940s, but remained marginal until Jack O'Neill opened the first-ever surf shop there in 1952 and his wetsuit invention made the cold water survivable. By the 1950s, local crews had settled the area into a tight community defined by the raw conditions. The beach hosted the Rip Curl Pro Search in 2011, bringing elite pros including Kelly Slater to compete at what has become one of the world's most respected urban breaks.
Parking is straightforward along Great Highway and at city-owned lots directly above the beach. The primary access challenge is the long paddle out from shore without a defined channel, complicated by the constant tidal exchanges between the Pacific and San Francisco Bay.
