More about South Beach OR

South Beach is an exposed sand-bottom beach break with multiple peaks distributed along its miles of shoreline. West swell pairs with offshore easterly winds for optimal conditions, producing more defined, hollow sections at low tide—particularly near the south jetty—while higher water stages offer gentler, more forgiving walls. The break favors left-hand turns and accommodates all skill levels from steep sections for advanced surfers to mellow spooling waves for beginners and longboarders. Waves tend to be smaller and milder closer to the jetty, with more powerful shape developing southward.

Organized surfing in the Newport area began in 1964 when Scott Blackman started riding at nearby Agate Beach after returning from military service, quickly inspiring a growing local crew. The Agate Beach Surf Club formed the following year and held the region's first competition in August 1965. The community maintains this tradition through annual contests, most notably the Agate Beach Surf Classic in September with divisions for shortboard, longboard, and paddleboard, plus youth-focused events like Otter Rock and Roll.

South Beach sits roughly a mile south of Newport within South Beach State Park, adjacent to the South Jetty. Day-use parking requires an on-site permit. The site permits horse access and supports fishing, clamming, scuba diving, and windsurfing depending on conditions. Extensive sandy beach enables low-tide exploration with views toward the Yaquina Bay Bridge. Winter months, particularly January, bring the most consistent swell; strong currents near the Yaquina Bay entrance present a navigational hazard.
