More about Sombrio

Sombrio's rocky reef break splits into three distinct sections—1st Peak, 2nd Peak, and Chickens—offering hollow, fast surf that accommodates intermediate to advanced surfers more than the exclusively advanced characterization suggests. The waves break both left and right across a bouldery reef, work at all tides, and pump hardest during autumn swells from the west with north-northeast offshore winds, typically peaking in October. Cold water demands a thick wetsuit year-round.

The break has loose historical ties to an alternative community in the 1980s when surfers and driftwood dwellers formed a semi-permanent settlement on the isolated coastline, though the spot lacks documented tournament history or widely recognized pro associations. Today it draws roughly 55,000 visitors annually, making it a known destination within BC's small regional surf scene.

Access requires a 30-minute-plus hike from the parking area and sits roughly halfway along the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail, creating a backcountry camping draw beyond just surfing. Tide management is critical—the beach experiences significant tidal swings that can cut off access around corners, and rip currents are present. The walk across sand and loose rock can be treacherous at higher tides.
