More about Snapper Rocks

Snapper Rocks is a right-hand point break with a rock and sand bottom that generates consistent, long-distance rides extending 150 to 300 meters. The break forms the starting point of the Superbank, a two-kilometer stretch of engineered sand that extends through Rainbow Bay, Greenmount, and Kirra. Since 1995, when the Tweed River sand bypass system began feeding the banks, the waves have transformed from a standard point break into a hollow, tubular wave that peaks during East to Southeast swells combined with offshore Southeast winds. Low to mid tides deliver the most controlled shape, though the break holds throughout the tide cycle. The break is moderately to highly difficult, with a steep takeoff and fast wall. Hazards include intense rip currents that sweep the point, shallow sandbar consequences, heavy crowding even in off-peak conditions, and pronounced localism from a well-established crew.

Snapper Rocks became a destination in the modern surfing era following the opening of the Snapper Rocks Surfriders Club in 1964, though widespread recognition arrived in 1995 when the sand pumping project began. The break entered the World Surf League calendar as the traditional season-opening event, the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast, which has run for over 17 years and continues to launch the championship tour in May. The event attracts the sport's top competitors and world champions—among them Kelly Slater, Mick Fanning, Stephanie Gilmore, Carissa Moore, and Gabriel Medina—and generates roughly ten million dollars in regional tourism spending annually.

Access is straightforward from Coolangatta, though parking fills quickly given the spot's year-round appeal and high local usage. The optimal window for clean conditions runs from early morning through late morning, generally 6:00 to 10:30, with autumn and winter offering the most consistent swell. February typically sees rideable waves more than half the time.
