More about Silver Strand
Silver Strand is a mile-long beach break with lefts and rights peeling across hard-packed sand, framed by the Channel Islands Harbor jetty to the south and the Port Hueneme jetty to the north. The break is reasonably consistent and performs best when west-northwest swell combines with easterly offshore winds, producing clean barrels particularly during winter. High tide is optimal for most sections, and the wave ranges from waist-high to triple overhead when conditions align. Crowding increases noticeably on good swell days.
Silver Strand holds significance within Oxnard's surf lineage, with surfers including Nathaniel Curran and Sage Erickson having developed their craft here. The beach area has deep roots in the local creative scene, particularly the punk-rock culture that has thrived there since the 1970s.
Access to Silver Strand requires entering via Victoria Avenue, a single road that creates intentional isolation and keeps the break less crowded than many Ventura County alternatives. It sits roughly seven miles from Highway 101, requiring extra effort to reach. Parking is available near the beach but fills during peak times; overflow street parking offers a nearby alternative. Hazards include sea urchins, rip currents, undertow, rocks, and water quality concerns, with some localism present.
