More about Shitpipe

Shitpipe is a left-hand break that forms over a man-made reef of concrete chunks positioned around a submerged sewer pipe caisson roughly a mile offshore. The wave requires several feet of swell overhead to produce rideable sets; west-facing swells with east-northeast wind shape the best conditions, and high tide offers the most consistent shape. The bottom is sand and rock in deeper water, and the break is known for producing powerful, hollow peeling sections that appeal to experienced surfers but intimidates newcomers.

Shitpipe appears to be a relatively modern phenomenon rather than a long-established spot—its reputation has grown among Southern California surfers through word-of-mouth as a rare, fickle break that activates only in specific winter and early-spring swell windows, with January and February being the most reliable months. The spot has cultivated a cult-like following among experienced locals but has not generated notable historical sessions or competitions of record.

The spot lies about 100 yards offshore just north of the El Segundo jetty and south of the Hyperion sewage treatment plant's outfall. Access is from Vista del Mar, with parking across from the treatment plant; reaching the break requires paddling from shore or boat access. Heavy localism and aggressive territorial behavior from established regulars are defining features of this break.
