More about Shipwreck
Shipwreck is a right-hand reef break capable of producing fast, hollow waves with barrel sections on good days. It works best between 5 and 9 feet, though swells can range from 3 to 12 feet depending on conditions. The main formation is a steep, zippy right that runs toward shore over shallow rock and sand reef, with a smaller left-hand reef reef in the center bay offering shorter alternatives. Peak season runs April through October when south swell is most consistent, with the break firing hardest in July. Offshore northwest winds provide the best shape. The shallow reef demands respect—sea urchins, rips, and rocks are constant hazards. Intermediate-to-advanced surfers dominate the lineup, though the break is more accessible than "advanced-only" labels suggest.
Shipwreck earned its name from an actual shipwreck positioned offshore that is no longer visible, a relic kept in local lore. Los Cabos as a region began attracting California surfers in the 1950s, and Shipwreck maintained a quiet, local reputation for decades before reaching wider awareness. The spot has escaped major competition circuit attention—the region instead hosts the Los Cabos Open of Surf, a WSL-sanctioned event held annually at nearby Zippers Beach since 2013, which draws international competitors but leaves Shipwreck itself relatively uncrowded year-round.
Access requires commitment. The break sits on the East Cape about forty minutes from San José del Cabo. Driving the final two kilometers involves a rough dirt road passable only with a high-clearance or four-wheel-drive vehicle. Public dirt parking sits near the beach, but services are minimal—bring all water, food, and supplies for the day. The remoteness and access difficulty are precisely what preserve the uncrowded character and why it remains a destination for surfers seeking isolation rather than crowds.
