More about Shi Shi Beach
Shi Shi Beach is a beach break fronting a nearly two-mile stretch of grey sand backed by dense coastal forest, with rocks and sea stacks including the Point of Arches at the southern end. Wave quality here is inconsistent—the swell often delivers soft, mushy conditions prone to closeouts rather than clean, peeling lines. Best swell arrives in winter months from northwest storms, while summer offers calmer water but smaller, less defined waves. The main hazards are intense cold water, strong pull-away currents near shore, rip currents, sneaker waves, and tide dynamics that can trap visitors beyond Point of Arches at high tide.
Access requires a backcountry permit from Olympic National Park plus a Makah Tribe recreation pass. The trailhead is in the Neah Bay area, and you must hike roughly two miles through forest and along the beach to reach the surf zone. The remoteness keeps crowds minimal compared to other Pacific Northwest spots.
