More about Shell Beach
Shell Beach features two reef peaks over a boulder-studded bottom that produces quick takeoffs requiring precision and awareness of the rocky substrate. Best surfed at low to mid tide with solid NW or SW swell and east-northeast winds, the break can accommodate swell from various directions. When small swells arrive, the waves turn mushy and accessible for beginners, but stronger conditions draw intermediate and advanced surfers who navigate the exposed rocks with skill.
Street parking along Ocean Boulevard provides access via stairs that descend the bluffs to a compact, tide-dependent rocky cove. The small beach area absorbs heavy foot traffic from tourists, kayakers, and tide poolers, particularly at lower tides when rock formations and tide pools become exposed. Walking to the water requires footwear or toughened feet because of the rocky beach.
