More about Seaside Reef

The break creates long, smooth left-hand walls that peel consistently across the reef—walls that can stretch hundreds of yards on quality swells. Best with westerly to northwesterly swells and offshore east winds; the reef works across tide ranges but excels when tide is low or falling. The shallow rocky bottom demands precise positioning and clean technique, making it a genuine expert-only break except in smaller summer waves.

Surfers have surfed this reef regularly since at least the 1950s. Rob Machado, a Cardiff native, honed his fluid style on these reefs and continues to surf the spot frequently. The break has hosted competitive events including the Volcom Blowfish Surf Series. The 45-million-year-old sandstone reef formation creates tide pools visible at low tide.

Access is via South Cardiff State Beach parking lot on Coast Highway 101, with a paid lot that opens at 7am. The break sits just north of Solana Beach and offers views along the coast. The shallow rocky reef requires respect for local knowledge and hazard awareness, particularly the unforgiving bottom on wipeouts.
