More about Seal Beach Pier, Southside
Seal Beach Pier Southside is an a-frame beach break on sand with shifting peaks ranging from mellow to occasionally hollow depending on sand positioning. Wave size typically works from waist-high to overhead, with the spot firing best on west to northwest swell during cooler months and northeast offshore winds. The break tapers quickly below waist-high and tends to close out in larger swells. Tidal influence is notable: lower tides produce fast, hollow sections near the pier structure, while mid-rising tide provides the best push and shape without closing out. Rip currents, stingrays, and post-rain runoff from nearby river mouths are consistent hazards.
Seal Beach developed into a significant surfing destination during the 1960s, producing or hosting accomplished surfers including the Haley brothers—Jack and Mike—both West Coast champions in consecutive years, as well as Robert August, whose prominence in Bruce Brown's Endless Summer films helped define an era of California surfing. Other notable figures from the era included Bill Fury, the Buehl and Lenahan brothers, and Eddie Bonham. The pier's sheltered position means it receives and refines distant groundswells, creating more manageable peaks than nearby breaks.
The 1,865-foot pier—California's second longest wooden pier—sits between two steep beach driveways, with the southern access slightly more negotiable for getting to the water. Metered parking runs five dollars per day with free one-hour spots available on nearby side streets. Water quality sits at fair best, bracketed by Long Beach and river outflow, making it advisable to avoid paddling after heavy rain due to pollution and runoff.
