More about Seal Beach Jetty
The jetty sits at the San Gabriel River mouth where waves break as shifting sand peaks over a sandy bottom, with both lefts and rights depending on swell direction and tide. On smaller south swells the break can offer long, fun walls, while larger west-northwest swells produce steep, hollow sections that demand more skill. The break works best with southwesterly swell, offshore northeast wind, and middle tide—contrary to the current description, low tide does not produce the best shape here.
Seal Beach is particularly notable for stingrays, attracting roughly one-third of all recorded stingray injuries in the United States. The warmer water near the river mouth and the soft sandy bottom created by river sediment draw the rays, making the stingray shuffle essential. Additionally, the San Gabriel River brings water quality problems after rain events, with high bacterial contamination flowing out during discharge.
Access is straightforward off Pacific Coast Highway via Main Street into Seal Beach, with paid parking available near the beach at 1st Street. The break draws a mixed crowd of beginners on mellow days and stronger surfers when conditions align, with the nearby pier creating rip currents and channels that demand awareness of the structure.
