More about Santa Monica Beach South

Santa Monica Beach South is a beginner-friendly beach break with a sandy bottom and sandbars that consistently produces small, predictable waves year-round. The right-breaking peaks are best in the 2–4 foot range, driven by southwest swell and favorable during northeast offshore wind conditions. Low tide brings the most rideable waves. The spot works well for lesson programs and progression-stage surfers who want frequent, small, mellow conditions without technical difficulty.

The south Santa Monica beach area holds historical significance in Southern California surfing, particularly for African American surfers and those excluded from other spots during the mid-20th century. The Inkwell, a two-block stretch immediately south of the pier, became an important gathering place, and notable early surfers including Nick Gabaldon learned to surf in this area. Modern events like the Pier 360 beach festival occasionally include tandem surf contests in the zone.

Access is straightforward via Beach Parking Lots 1–4 South, located along Appian Way and Ocean Avenue with convenient restroom facilities and accessible parking. Morning sessions before onshore winds pick up offer the cleanest conditions; the break is exposed and receives consistent wind by mid-day.
