More about San Elijo State Beach
San Elijo State Beach features a reef and sand bottom that produces mellow, peeling waves favored by longboarders. The break works both directions and holds shape consistently throughout the year. West to northwest swell performs best, ideally combined with northeast to east wind. The wave breaks cleanest at mid-tide, particularly on a rising tide that fills in the reef nicely. Minimum swell size is around 2 feet, with typical waves in the waist-to-head-high range, occasionally overhead. This spot accommodates surfers across ability levels rather than exclusively intermediate riders, with a particularly strong longboard culture.
The break's name derives from concrete drainage pipes that once sat on the beach as landmarks before being buried by sand accumulation over time. Winter months, especially January, offer the most consistent clean conditions, though the reef maintains surfable shape year-round. The area has drawn regional attention from accomplished longboarders, including 3x WSL World Champion Joel Tudor.
Access is straightforward from the state park, which sits between Cardiff-by-the-Sea and Encinitas. Two parking areas serve day-use visitors with a $10-15 vehicle fee. The beach lies below bluffs accessed via long stairways and ramps. Facilities include restrooms, outdoor showers, and free beach wheelchair checkout at the campground entrance. The 171-site campground nearby makes multi-day visits convenient. Submerged rocks present a legitimate hazard, and the break attracts enough surfers that a respectful local crew keeps the water organized.
