More about San Clemente State Beach

San Clemente State Beach is a beach break with a sand and rock bottom that works across all tide stages but has particular push at mid to high tide. The waves favor left-hand shape over distances up to 50 meters. The break tends to section out and lose shape, though periods emerge when walls hollow enough to barrel, generally ranging from waist-high to head-high. Southwest groundswells with northeast offshore winds create the cleanest conditions, typically peaking in autumn months around October.

San Clemente's surf heritage runs deep in Southern California's competitive scene. Phil Hoffman surfed here from the 1940s onward and rose to top world ranking in 1964, establishing early prominence for the area. The subsequent generation included Shane Beschen, Jim Hogan, and Dino Andino, and Greg Long emerged as one of the world's premier big wave specialists. Today the lineup continues with Kolohe Andino, Caroline Marks (who won Olympic gold), Griffin Colapinto (the first California-born surfer to win the Vans Triple Crown and a recent Olympic competitor), and others regularly competing on the professional circuit.

The beach sits in central San Clemente within reach of the pier, with reasonably accessible parking and entry typical of Orange County state beaches. Professional and semi-pro competitions use the break regularly as part of the World Surf League tour.
