More about San Clemente Pier, Northside

The Northside of San Clemente Pier is a consistent beach break that works at any stage of the tide, producing left and right peaks alongside occasional wedging off the pier itself. Southwest swells with northeast winds offer the best conditions, and while the break can be mellow during small-wave days suitable for developing surfers, larger northwest and western swells bring more demanding conditions with steeper, more powerful sections. Rip currents and crowds are regular features, particularly in early mornings when the local high school team paddles out.

San Clemente has anchored a continuous surfing presence since the 1960s, producing generations of accomplished surfers including the legendary big-wave specialist Greg Long, along with modern tour pros like Kolohe Andino and Caroline Marks. The pier itself, a historic wooden structure stretching over 1,200 feet, has hosted the Pier Bowl Surf Classic as part of the annual Ocean Festival—a competitive event drawing high-level surfers from Orange and San Diego counties across open divisions. The Groms Rule youth competition, now in its 16th year, runs at the same location, focusing on young surfers rather than elite performance and judging on wave selection, ride length, and enjoyment.

The break sits at the base of the San Clemente Pier off Avenida del Mar in central San Clemente, with metered parking available at the nearby Parque del Mar lot from 9am to 10pm. Interstate 5 access is straightforward from both north and south via local exits, and the spot's proximity to downtown amenities and established facilities makes it one of the more accessible breaks in the region.
