More about San Blas

San Blas offers a mix of beach and point breaks across Matanchen Bay. The beach peaks produce mellow, rolling waves that can run several hundred meters on good days—particularly during the March through October season when southwest swells combine with offshore northeast winds. Waves typically range from waist-high to double overhead, working across all skill levels with gentler inside sections for beginners and more defined walls for intermediates. Rocks, rips, and crowds present hazards when the break activates.

Stoner's Point, the area's most famous break, gained prominence in the 1960s through iconic photographs by surf photojournalist Ron Stoner, which brought international attention to the region. The point break became legendary for its exceptional length—it was once recognized by Guinness as holding the record for the world's longest rideable wave, reportedly capable of running over a mile depending on swell quality and angle. This discovery helped establish San Blas and the broader Riviera Nayarit coast as a significant destination in Mexico's emerging surf culture.

San Blas town sits on the Nayarit coast just north of Matanchen Bay, accessible by road and easily reached from Puerto Vallarta. Surfboard rentals are available on the streets between the plaza and beach, as well as from beachside restaurants. Some breaks like Lolas remain more remote but can be accessed by water taxi from the town waterfront.
