More about San Agustinillo

San Agustinillo is an exposed beach break with left and right-hand waves peeling across a sand and rock bottom. The spot comes alive when south-southwest swells roll up the Pacific coast, typically producing forgiving, glassy waves best suited to beginners and intermediate surfers. North winds provide offshore conditions, while tidal range is modest at under one meter.

The Oaxaca coast's role in surfing traces to the broader development of the central Mexican Pacific as a destination from the 1970s onward, with San Agustinillo establishing itself alongside nearby Mazunte as the region's beginner-focused center. Unlike the heavyweight reputation of Puerto Escondido to the northwest, San Agustinillo developed a more relaxed, yoga-inflected identity catering to paddlers building fundamentals and small group surf schools rather than challenging hollow waves. The spot gained steady low-level tourism traffic but never achieved the iconic or competitive status of headliner Oaxaca breaks.

San Agustinillo sits roughly 12 kilometers west of the fishing town of Puerto Ángel along a coastal road accessed via Highway 175 from Pochutla. Direct public colectivo service runs from Pochutla, or visitors can hire a taxi from the crossroads. The village itself holds modest beachfront accommodation ranging from basic cabanas to small hotels, and amenities support casual visitors rather than resort infrastructure. Water entry carries moderate hazards: strong alongshore and rip currents are common along this section of coast, and shark presence, though statistically rare, warrants caution.
