More about Samurai
Samurai is a hollow, powerful beach break with peaks running 50 to 150 metres across a sandy bottom that produces both left and right-hand waves. It performs best on south swells with offshore wind from the north-northwest, and also works in northerly swells. Medium to high tide offers the best conditions. Experienced surfers get significantly more from this spot on bigger days, though it breaks acceptably across a range of swell sizes. The break is rated highly consistent, functioning as a genuine swell magnet that delivers waves on most days.
In terms of access and logistics, Samurai sits in Tomaree National Park backed by large active dunes, reached only by 4WD via Gan Gan Road near Frost Road or by foot from One Mile Beach or the Big Rocky area. A mandatory beach pass (obtainable at Anna Bay) is enforced by National Parks Rangers. Avoid driving within two hours either side of high tide due to rapidly changing beach and ocean conditions. The beach has zero facilities — bring all supplies, water, and shade needed for the day. Local surfers command respect in the water; the lineup is typically sparse but locals work it hard. Hazards include small but present rips, sharks, heavy 4WD traffic, and active sand dune dynamics.
