More about Sabon
Sabón is a beach break with a sand bottom that produces mushy, knee-to-waist-high waves suitable for progression-level surfers. An outer port breakwater moderates incoming swell energy, which is why the break works best during NW or West swells. East or southeast wind is optimal, and while waves form across all tide stages, the break performs most consistently at low tide. Beyond the common beach-break hazards, water quality is degraded by an adjacent thermal power plant and industrial park where the Bolaños River outlets; swimmers and surfers have documented encounters with jellyfish and sea urchins.
The spot has an active local community supported by Arteixo Surf Club, which operates a school certified by the Galician Surfing Federation. Beyond this, documented surf history or notable competitions specific to Sabón is minimal in available sources, though Arteixo itself is recognized as one of Galicia's more consistent year-round surfing areas.
Sabón sits approximately 10 kilometers from A Coruña Airport and is accessible via the N-552 or A-6 (Arteixo exit). The 900-meter beach has over 100 paid parking spaces, though these fill by 10:30 AM during summer months. Showers and other basic amenities are available. June through September offers warm water and generally favorable conditions, though December brings consistent winter swell if you tolerate colder temperatures.
