More about Russian Rivermouth
Russian Rivermouth produces righthand barrels when southwest swell, east wind, and an incoming low-to-mid tide align—a confluence that occurs infrequently. The break sits on a sandbar constantly reshaped by the river's flow, making the wave unpredictable season to season. Lefts form when conditions permit. This is an intermediate-to-expert break, heavier and more fickle than nearby alternatives.
The spot shines during winter months, particularly January, and through summer into early autumn. Outside these windows the wave rarely cooperates.
Access is straightforward via Highway 1 south of Jenner: turn west at signs for Goat Rock State Beach, follow State Park Road to its end, and hike briefly to reach the break. The area sits within the Red Triangle shark habitat, and the exposed position creates persistent rip currents and scattered rocks.
