More about Rucos
Rucos is a hybrid beach and rocky bottom reef break, with waves breaking both left and right. The main left-hand wave develops power and hollowness when caught by strong south or southwest swells. Summer months bring overhead peaks from distant southern swells, while winter offers smaller, more forgiving waves suitable for developing surfers. All tidal stages produce rideable waves, but east-facing winds are offshore and most favorable; onshore winds degrade the break quickly.
Access to Rucos requires your own vehicle, ideally a 4x4, as the spot lies remote north of Mazatlan city center. Despite this barrier, it attracts a dedicated local crew of surfers. The beach itself remains largely undiscovered by tourists, remaining primarily a surfer's destination. Coordination with a guide may be necessary given localism reported at nearby point breaks in the area.
