More about Rosarito Beach

Rosarito offers a long series of beach breaks with both left and right-hand waves over sand, plus reef breaks in parts of the bay. The break suits multiple skill levels—the northern sections around the pier and Baja Malibu have gentler, slower waves ideal for learning, while the southern end holds larger, steeper peaks for more experienced surfers. Southwest swell paired with offshore east wind delivers the cleanest conditions, typically best during summer months. Water movement here is affected by river runoff and coastal currents.

Surfing took root in this region when American surfers first explored the Ensenada area in the early 1960s, making it the birthplace of Mexican surfing. Rosarito has since developed a consistent local scene and now hosts national and international competitions, including recent sanctioned events where top Mexican surfers like multiple national champions compete.

The town sits roughly 20 miles south of the US-Mexico border via the toll highway (Route 1D) and offers direct access to a sandy beach with nearby accommodations and local services. However, significant water quality problems persist here due to sewage contamination from upstream sources. Multiple beaches in Rosarito have tested far above safe bacteria levels and are officially unsafe for water contact; conditions vary by location and season, with winter showing the worst contamination.
