More about Rockpile

Rockpile is a right-hand reef break that peels off a jagged rock formation with a notoriously gnarly take-off zone where boils work most surfers. The wave runs fast and hollow with barrels in proper conditions, but requires mid to high tide to work properly since lower tides expose the reef at the critical take-off. South and southwest swells combine with northeast offshore winds to produce the best shape, typically during autumn months. Expert surfers only—the break offers little margin for error on entry and exit.

Rockpile is regarded as one of the most dangerous breaks in Southern California, with thousands of sharp rocks and coral throughout, urchin-covered boulders just below the surface, and a reputation for substantial localism among the local crew who maintain the break.

The spot occupies the southern cove of Heisler Park in Laguna Beach, accessible via stairs near the lawn bowling club area. Parking on Cliff Drive is metered and fills rapidly during summer months. The small isolated cove is designated for surfing only, not swimming, and lower tides expose tide pools at the periphery.
