More about Rockaway Beach

Rockaway Beach is a sand-bottom beach break with rolling waves that work year-round but most consistently during winter months, particularly January. The break offers both left and right-hand options with wave faces typically ranging from waist-high in summer to overhead in winter. Best conditions develop when northwest swell combines with offshore east winds, and surfers report that mid to high tide produces better wave quality. The bank and gentle bathymetry make it accessible for beginners but can hold definition through the wave face, supporting practice and skill progression without requiring a big swell.

Rockaway began attracting visitors in the 1920s as a rail-accessible vacation destination, later named after New York's Rockaway Beach by early developers. The area developed a vintage motel culture in the post-WWII era as a family getaway spot from Portland. While no specific notable competitions or champion surfers are tied to the break in my search results, the consistency and beginner-friendly conditions have sustained its appeal as a learning destination.

The beach anchors a seven-mile stretch of sandy shoreline punctuated by the Twin Rocks sea stacks, a pair of massive volcanic formations that offer distinctive coastal scenery. The area maintains over twenty formal beach access points along the west side of Highway 101, with reliable parking at the Rockaway Beach Chamber of Commerce (with diagonal parking and an adjacent lot) and at Manhattan Beach State Recreation Site just north of town. The spot remains lightly crowded, though hazards include shore-break rips and isolated rocks that require basic awareness during paddle-out.
