More about Rockaway
Rockaway is an advanced right-hand reef and beach break that works best on moderate to large northwest, west, and southwest swells in the 3 to 10-foot range. The break features a prominent right at the north end, beachbreaks through the middle, and a left at the south end on westerly swells. Low tide provides the most rideable conditions. The break sits in an exposed position where it fills quickly on big swell combined with outgoing tide, creating powerful currents and a steep drop-off that makes entry hazardous even for experienced swimmers. Offshore southeast winds provide the cleanest shape. Winter months typically see the most consistent and largest waves.
Rockaway earned minor notoriety in the 1980s when a surf magazine published a striking black-and-white photo of a surfer named Brian Zelles from the Central Valley riding an exceptionally large wave there, described as a "hellwave" in the surf community. The beach's distinctive rock formations served as a filming location for the 2012 sports drama Chasing Mavericks. The spot attracts some lunchbreak surfers from the broader Bay Area but is better known for occasional standout sessions than for regular crowds.
The beach sits roughly seven miles south of San Francisco along Highway 1, just north of Linda Mar. Free parking is available 24 hours in lots accessed via Rockaway Beach Avenue or San Marlo Way, with restrooms, outdoor showers, and wheelchair access. The southern parking area provides access to the widest beach section, though tide significantly affects usable sand. Coastal trails connect to surrounding areas. The steep offshore topography and powerful water movement make this primarily an experienced-surfer destination.
