More about Robertsport
Robertsport's primary break, Cotton Trees, consists of long, peeling left-hand point waves that peel away from a rocky point. In typical conditions, the wave splits into two sections—Outside and Inside Cottons—that can each deliver rides exceeding 100 yards; during larger groundswells, these sections link into a continuous wall capable of running half a mile. The break works year-round but performs best with southwest groundswells and northeast winds, favoring the falling phase of the high tide cycle. Rocky points and rip currents pose real hazards requiring careful navigation, particularly during larger swells. Fisherman's Point offers gentler terrain for beginners, while other named breaks—Cassava Point, Camp Point, and Cutting Point—provide additional options along the coastline.
The modern era of organized surfing in Robertsport began around 2003 when American visitors arrived after Liberia's civil war and encountered Alfred Lomax, a local who had earlier found a bodyboard and taught himself to ride waves. From these origins, a small but dedicated local community developed. The Robertsport Surf Club, established by the Canadian NGO Universal Outreach, formalized support for local surfers. The annual national competition has run for at least a decade, with the 11th edition occurring in May 2024. That same year, Robertsport hosted the continent's inaugural Africa Surf Tour event under the banner "Surf to Rise," marking the region's emergence as a competitive surfing destination on the African stage.
The town lies roughly 3.5 hours' drive west of Monrovia along the coastal highway in Grand Cape Mount County. The breaks cluster around rocky points accessible from the town, with Cotton Trees serving as the primary landmark. The area remains relatively uncrowded despite hosting international competition, allowing consistent waves to break with few surfers in the water.
