More about Robe Long Beach
Long Beach is a fairly consistent sand-bottom beach break exposed to offshore conditions from the east, working across all tide stages and most of the year. The break holds both left and right waves, with varying intensity depending on location—the First and Second ramps offer gentler conditions suitable for beginners, while the Third Ramp and beyond produce more substantial waves. Southwest swell combined with east winds provides optimal conditions, and April typically sees the most reliable clean patterns.
Surfing at Robe began in earnest during the 1960s when Steve Woolston moved to the area and established the Robe Easter Classic, a surfing competition still held each April that adapted to local conditions by shifting location based on where the best waves appeared. Woolston also opened Steve's Place, which became one of Australia's longest-running surf shops, anchoring the local community. The Easter Classic developed a steady following and helped build Robe's identity as a regional surf destination.
Long Beach sprawls across approximately 12 kilometers of white sand in the Limestone Coast region, roughly four hours southeast of Adelaide. Access is notably flexible—multiple ramps allow direct vehicle driving onto the sand, with the Third Ramp near Steve Woolston Road being the primary access point for surfers seeking larger waves. Free parking is available both on the beach and in nearby lots. Water temperatures remain cool year-round, requiring a 3mm wetsuit even during summer months. Rip currents are a potential hazard, and the area attracts many windsurfers alongside surfers.
