More about Refugio

Refugio is a right-hand point break with a mixed sand and rock bottom that consistently produces soft, mellow waves suitable for beginners and longboarders. The break rarely turns hollow or critical even during larger swells, though stronger conditions can generate rides extending over 100 meters. The spot generally requires a minimum swell of 3 to 4 feet to produce consistently surfable waves and works best during the winter months, when the Channel Islands create a sheltered window for west-facing breaks like this one.

Refugio sits on the Gaviota Coast approximately 20 miles west of Santa Barbara, just north of El Capitan State Beach. Access is straightforward via the Refugio Road exit from Highway 101, which leads directly to an entrance kiosk. From there, a short paved road connects to parking areas positioned outside the main campground beneath the freeway, along with day-use and camping facilities including showers and restrooms. Entry requires a modest day-use or camping fee.
