More about Redsands
Redsands is a fast, hollow reef break that forms over shallow, uneven rock. The left-hand waves are tight, intensely hollow barrels best in smaller swell, while the right-hand waves are longer and more powerful, breaking in bigger swells. Both sides demand precision in very shallow water. Easterly swells produce an A-frame peak, southerly swells yield a short intense left and longer right, and northerly swells create the reverse pattern. It works best at mid to high tide during east, northeast, or southeast swell, with southwest winds optimal.
Bodyboard competitions have been held at Redsands since at least 2001, and the break appeared on online surfing guides before that. Over the decades it has grown steadily busier; on any day with a hint of rideable waves, multiple locals watch from the headland while carloads of surfers and bodyboarders fill the parking area at first light.
Redsands sits at the headland entrance to Bass Point Reserve in Shell Cove, City of Shellharbour. Free parking is available year-round at dedicated Red Sands and Maloneys Bay car parks, though peak season parking is tight; early or late arrival is recommended. The spot carries strong local presence and an established pecking order. Beyond the notorious hazards of shallow reef and sea urchins, rips and fishing line present additional risks.
