More about Redhead
Redhead's exposed reef break picks up consistent groundswells from the northeast and works best with north-northwest winds that provide shelter from the prevailing northeast flow. The left-hand side offers better shape than the right, with waves breaking for extended sections across the reef, particularly on mid to high tides. The break can be powerful and challenging for less experienced surfers, with walls forming a natural 100-meter stretch suitable for carving. The beach flanks a dramatic headland of ochre cliffs and rocky outcrops on its northern end, with gentler sand beach conditions to the south.
Redhead has an established place in Newcastle's surf history dating to at least the mid-1960s, when it was surfed by a small group including Peter Hogan. The spot became featured in major local events, including a 1987 surf expo that displayed collector's boards from Newcastle's heritage. It has remained central to the Newcastle surfing scene through Surfest competitions and local clubs, with longtime figures like judge and contest coordinator John Harvey bringing decades of involvement to the community.
The beach sits just south of Newcastle on the Lake Macquarie coast with straightforward car-park access at the northern end near the Redhead Surf Life Saving Club, plus alternative parking at Webb Street with a wheelchair-accessible boardwalk past the lagoon. The spot is patrolled seasonally and benefits from relatively consistent swell, though crowds build when conditions fire. Rocky hazards line the northern headland, and shark monitoring infrastructure reflects historical risk in the region.
