More about Punta Rosarito

Punta Rosarito is the southern anchor of the Seven Sisters, a string of seven consecutive right point breaks in Central Baja. It delivers consistent power and size suited for intermediate to advanced surfers. The break works best on northwest to west swell with northeast offshore wind, maintaining all tide conditions. Winter swells, particularly in January, bring the most organized conditions, though the spot produces surfable waves roughly half the time even then. Hazards include rip currents, shark activity, rocky bottom, and shifting currents in the cove.

This stretch of coast has been surfed since the 1960s when Californians first ventured down the peninsula, with the Rosarito area developing into a regional hub by the 1970s. The region has produced notable local surfers and maintains a dedicated year-round community. The broader area is sometimes called the Cradle of Surfing in Baja California, and while international competitions and visits happen periodically, Punta Rosarito itself remains primarily known within skilled surfing circles rather than mass tourism.

The spot lies south of the fishing village of Santa Rosalillita along Mexico Highway 1, accessible via a rough coastal road requiring high-clearance vehicles. The final stretch is slow and remote, covering several miles of rocky shoreline. There are no facilities at the break itself; Santa Rosalillita to the north and Villa Jesus Maria further south are the nearest supply points. Surfers need to arrive fully self-sufficient with fuel, water, and food, as this is an undeveloped location in remote terrain roughly 400 miles south of the U.S. border.
