More about Punta Roca
Punta Roca is a long right-hand point break over a rock and cobble bottom that generates steep walls and fast barrel sections. During large southern swells it can deliver rides approaching half a mile, with consistent performance from head to triple overhead. The wave responds best to mid-to-high tide paired with southwest to south-southwest swell, and requires northeasterly to northwesterly offshore wind for optimal shape.
The point first hosted World Surf League competition in 2011 but saw no major professional events for over a decade before becoming part of the Championship Tour with the inaugural Surf City El Salvador Pro in 2022. It has since become a fixture on the professional calendar, with recent competition winners including Gabriela Bryan and Jordy Smith in 2025. The break is now recognized as one of Central America's premier venues for elite professional surfing.
Punta Roca sits about three miles east of La Libertad and roughly 30 minutes south of San Salvador's airport by car. The approach requires caution due to sharp volcanic rock formations both above and below the waterline. Localism and crowding are persistent factors, and the shallow reef bottom with features like the submerged boulder Mama Roca demand advanced skill and protection such as reef booties or rash guards.
