More about Punta Custodio

Punta Custodio is a river mouth break with a sand bottom that works on most swell angles and tides. The break produces both left and right waves, with the right side peeling for over a hundred meters when conditions align. It's best suited to intermediate surfers and longboarders, delivering consistent 1-3 foot waves in winter from northwestern swell, with slightly larger and more consistent waves arriving in spring and summer from southern directions.

The estuary that feeds the break can create strong outflows during low tide, particularly around new and full moons. Currents associated with the river mouth require attention, and the break rarely gets crowded, often hosting only a handful of surfers even during better swells.

Punta Custodio lies about 65 miles north of Puerto Vallarta near the fishing village of Platanitos, situated between Sayulita and San Blas in Riviera Nayarit. The area is a private gated community with an extensive 8-kilometer beach called Playa Las Tortugas. Road access from Puerto Vallarta is straightforward with minimal turns, though the community is restricted as private residential property.
