More about Punta Canoas
Punta Canoas is a right point break with exceptionally long rides, holding shape for up to 200 meters over rock and reef. The break works best with southwest groundswells coupled with north-northeast wind, and consistently performs throughout autumn, with October typically offering the cleanest, most reliable conditions. Waves here suit intermediate surfers who are comfortable reading point-break mechanics and navigating the rocky bottom. Beyond the immediate takeoff zone, hazards include powerful currents and sharks, adding serious consequences to any wipeouts in the exposed waters.
The Seven Sisters breaks, of which Punta Canoas is the first, saw documented surfing activity by the early 1960s, with archival footage preserved from that era. By the early 1970s, organized expeditions like the San Onofre Surfing Club's two-week journey were charting the sequence, relying on hand-drawn maps and surf publications to locate these distant points. The location remained known primarily to dedicated expedition surfers willing to invest weeks to chase remote Baja breaks.
Access requires exiting Mexico Highway 1 roughly 45 miles south of El Rosario and committing to a fifty-mile drive on rough washboard and desert roads that deteriorate significantly when wet—fine silt can bog a vehicle axle-deep during or shortly after rain. A capable 4WD is essential, and the journey typically consumes several hours each way. Despite the commitment, the remoteness has preserved the break's appeal to surfers seeking long point rides far from crowds.
