More about Punta Burros
Punta Burros is a rock-bottomed point break that produces predominantly right-hand waves, occasionally with a shorter left. Rides often exceed 100 meters on the right side. The break is notably steep and fast relative to neighboring Nayarit spots, with waves typically head-to-chest high but capable of reaching head-overhead in larger swells. Mid-tide conditions produce the cleanest shape; high tide tends to push the wave flatter. South and southwest swells generate the most consistent peaks, with north-northeast winds offering the best grooming.
Access requires a five-minute walk through jungle to the beach, as the break sits on private resort property and the main hotel entrance is not available to non-guests. The rocks forming the break lie two to three feet below the surface and are generally algae-covered rather than sharp. Sea urchins are present in the water. The local surfing community maintains a strong presence in the lineup, though visitors who show respect report receiving a friendly reception.
The beach itself features white sand and views toward the Sierra Madre, sitting within the broader Punta Mita region of Riviera Nayarit. Summer months (May through August) deliver the most consistent swells, though large winter storms from the north can produce quality waves as well.
